Ulama must clarify the law
MECCA: Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the ulama must explain the benefits of the controversial Islamic Family Law (Federal Territories) (Amendment) Act 2005.
She said they were the experts in syariah and should be the ones to explain any ambiguity in the law.
"My ministry has no expertise in it," she told Malaysian journalists covering the haj yesterday.
Shahrizat thanked the Cabinet for putting on hold the enforcement of the law to allow more time for various parties to give their views on the issue.
She said the postponement would allow Jakim and her ministry to meet and air their views on the legislation.
"Any law can be improved. The important thing is that the decision taken should not deviate from the syariah," she added. – Bernama
